Piano Scales – Major, Minor & Pentatonic

Every melody you have ever played comes from a scale, and there are only twelve of them to learn. A scale is simply the set of notes a piece is allowed to use, played in order. Learn the formula that builds a major scale once, and you can construct all twelve from memory — no table required.

The formula that builds every major scale

A major scale is a fixed pattern of steps: whole, whole, half, whole, whole, whole, half. A whole step skips one key; a half step moves to the very next key, black or white.

Start on C and the formula lands entirely on white keys — that is why C major is the first scale everyone learns. Start on D and the same pattern forces you onto F♯ and C♯. The pattern never changes; only the starting note does.

The keyboard letters column works on our online piano, where lowercase letters are white keys and capital letters are black keys.

Natural minor scales

A natural minor scale takes the same notes as a major scale but starts three semitones lower. That is why A minor and C major contain exactly the same white keys — they are relatives, and they sound completely different because the emphasis moves.

The minor formula is whole, half, whole, whole, half, whole, whole. Try it from A and you will get A B C D E F G A, the most-used minor scale in pop and classical music.

Pentatonic scales: five notes, no wrong ones

The major pentatonic scale drops the two notes that create tension, leaving five notes that sound good in almost any order. In C: C D E G A. Improvise on those five notes over the C-Am-F-G progression and nothing will sound wrong.

The minor pentatonic is the same shape shifted down three semitones: A C D E G — the scale behind most blues and rock solos.

Fingering for beginners

Right hand C major uses fingers 1-2-3-1-2-3-4-5: the thumb passes under the third finger after E, then the pattern repeats. Left hand mirrors it with the third finger passing over the thumb.

Practise each scale hands separately at a slow metronome mark before joining them. Speed comes from evenness, not from pushing the tempo — a scale played fast and unevenly teaches your fingers the wrong thing.

Frequently asked questions

How many major scales are there on piano?

Twelve — one for each note of the chromatic scale. Three of them (with five, six and seven sharps or flats) are rarely used in beginner music, but they follow the same formula.

What is the easiest piano scale for a beginner?

C major, because it has no black keys. G, D, F and B flat major are the natural next steps since they add only one or two black keys each.

What is the formula for a major scale?

Whole, whole, half, whole, whole, whole, half. In semitones: 2-2-1-2-2-2-1 from the root note.

Should I practise scales every day?

Ten minutes a day is more valuable than an hour once a week. Scales build the muscle memory that makes actual pieces easier, so short and daily beats long and occasional.
