Why this piece works for practice

This is the melody most people can hum but few can name, and it is a perfect first classical piece. It moves almost entirely by step, stays on white keys, and repeats the same rhythmic figure four times. Play it well and you have learned the shape of an entire Beethoven movement.

How to practise it

  1. Play the first phrase u u i o slowly and let the repeated note lead into the higher one without a bump.
  2. Note that phrase three is phrase one starting a third lower — the same rhythm, a different starting point.
  3. Play the whole theme in one breath, then try it a tone higher to hear how the key changes colour.
