Why this piece works for practice

Silent Night is a study in 3/4 breathing. Each phrase rises and then falls, and the melody never rushes — which makes it the best Christmas piece to learn if you want something that sounds finished after only a few practices. It also spans nearly an octave, so your hand starts to cover real distance.

How to practise it

  1. Play o p o u and notice the shape: up, up, down. That shape repeats throughout the carol.
  2. Hold the last note of each phrase for its full value — carols fall apart when the endings get clipped.
  3. Play it quietly. Silent Night played loudly loses everything that makes it work.
