Why this piece works for practice

This one is built on a four-note turn — up, down, down — that you play again and again in different places. Once the turn is in your fingers, the whole song falls out of it. It is also short (about twenty notes), which makes it perfect for practising a clean start after a mistake instead of stopping.

How to practise it

  1. Loop the turn o p o i until your hand does it without thinking.
  2. Notice the second half is the same turn moved down a whole step, then played once more at the original height.
  3. Play it with no pauses between phrases — the short middle phrases are where beginners usually stall.
